Shortly after countries all over the world started shutting down due to COVID-19 I was contacted by a fellow composer about joining a group of composers from all over the world in a collaborative project called Para el Pueblo. I was honored to work with composers Emily Ta (New Jersey) and Uxío Darriba (Spain) to create 3 duets for cello and piano. My composition is titled The Inbetween in an acknowledgement a state of being in a transitional period in my life during quarantine as I sit waiting for the next chapter of my life to begin, and the transitional state that our country is in during the fight for racial equity and the end of police brutality. It follows the story of a bright eyed college graduate entering the world to discover that it was not the "great economy" full of well paying jobs that they were told to expect. The graduate soon learns that the degree doesn't mean they will make a living wage. There are amazing artists in every medium with unique voices and styles who have stories to tell. But the city struggles from a lack of resources. After years of thinking about this and talking with artists from all over the city I believe we can come together to create multidisciplinary showcases and exhibitions that will change the way people look at art in Milwaukee. Petrichor Collective will focus on specifically bringing together artists from marginalized communities to create showcases with themes of social justice, sustainable change, climate change, equity, and celebrations of diversity. Petrichor Ensemble will be an extension of the Collective and will be dedicated to performing works by contemporary composers and musicians involved in the Collective.
